  • Jill has things to discuss with Shula. She was cross that Shula had involved David. When she learns that Shula still has not spoken to Alistair, Jill makes it very clear that it must not be put off any longer; to date all Shula has managed is a message on his answering machine. Bert’s interruption is something of a relief for Shula; she wanted to talk to him about church security.
  • Janet is shopping in advance of the PCC meeting. Betty would be willing to help with the Harvest Supper, which will be simpler than last year’s, but she cannot go to the meeting; she had promised Roy an evening sorting out the statement he wants her to make.
  • Roy describes to his mother how he felt when he saw the baby. He loves her and she needs him. He can’t give up. Mike will not help with the statement, believing that to be in Roy’s best interests, since Kate is so set against him. Betty, however, is convinced and agrees to support Roy.
  • At the PCC meeting, Janet outlines her plans for Church Tourism as a way of making more use St Stephens, ensuring that there are more people about; Bert wants to lock up the church and looks to Marjorie as an ally. The vicar wins the day. Marjorie supports her and Shula is going to a conference on the subject in November; Jill’s aside indicates that it is a pity it is not sooner.
  • Sensing Shula’s continued trouble, Janet offers to talk about it. But it is not to Janet she should be talking. Taking up Janet’s offer of the loan of her mobile phone, Shula arranges to see Alistair on Friday.
