Lexi is still unsure; Kate has a lot to think about; Noluthando puts her life at risk.
Radio Times: Noluthando goes too far and Kate is forced to step up
Characters: Freddie, Kate, Lexi, Noluthando, Peggy, Roy- Noluthando is giving Peggy a lesson in downloading a video. She wonders how she will cope when Noluthando returns to South Africa, Noluthando admits to looking forward to getting away from her mother, even though Peggy insists that she loves her. Noluthando is fed up with Home Farm and the recent talk of contamination. Peggy understands. She’s heard that her daughter has said something unfortunate to Justin.
- Roy has a surprise planned for Lexi but asks that they avoid the subject of the surrogacy behind them. They reach a tentative agreement.
- Peggy asks Kate about Noluthando’s party. Apparently, mother and daughter haven’t spoken for a week. Kate asks her to intercede, perhaps telling her that Kate loves her. She wants her daughter to like her. Peggy replies with both barrels. Kate needs to realise that she is primarily her mother, not her friend. Furthermore, she needs to be emotionally reliable and earn her daughter’s respect. Above all, she needs to stop talking her usual rubbish and behave like a proper mother.
- At Lower Loxley, Noluthando spots Freddy selling drugs in the garden. She can’t believe it. However, he can’t see the problem. It provides some much-needed cash. Seeing Kate approaching, she asks him for a pill. He offers a quarter of one but she swallows the whole thing. She tells her mother that she is uninvited and that she should shut up. Whatever she has to say is “too little, too late”. She flounces off back to the house. Kate apologises to Freddy, asking him what she has to do to get her daughter to love her. He disappears rather sharply leaving Kate to her own thoughts.
- Roy’s surprise meal is not having the desired effect. It’s clear that Lexi isn’t sure that she’s made the right decision. Staying in Britain would have been an ideal opportunity to provide financial help for her family in Bulgaria. Roy can’t see her problem. She’s not obligated to Adam or Ian. She agrees but says that the men are her friends and that it would make her happy. It would be her heartfelt gift to them.
- Freddy finds a clearly stoned Noluthando hanging out of a second-floor window, moaning about feeling hot and having no friends. She believes that the local girls call her “black dirt.” Kate walks in and discovering that she’s taken a pill, orders Freddy out of the room while she tries to talk her down. She tells her that Freddy’s father died from a fall from the roof at the hall and that Freddy would want her to stay safe. After some tense moments, Kate manages to get her daughter inside, only to find that she slips into unconsciousness. She shouts to Freddy to call an ambulance…now, and mention that she’s taken drugs.
