Radio Times: Lilian tries to make amends
Characters: Adam, Christine, Elizabeth, Freddie, Lilian, Noluthando- Fresh from her bruising experience with Justin, Lilian is lying low at The Bull. Elizabeth finally manages to contact her with queries about the wedding arrangement. In no mood to think about it Lilian tells Elizabeth to make the decisions herself.
- Freddie is off, somewhat belatedly, to college, but needs petrol money from his mother. She gives it to him and he asks for more. Getting nowhere with Jill’s suggestion that he might help with marketing Deck the Halls, Elizabeth raises the subject of the twins’ birthday party, to which Freddie replies that he won’t be there; he will be in Magaluf or somewhere similar with his friends. Elizabeth quickly disabuses him of this idea. She has his passport and it will stay locked in the safe.-Meeting Noluthando at college, Freddie wants to know why she is waving to two other students. Freddie bemoans his penniless state and his mother’s refusal to release his passport. He’d like to sample South Africa. Noluthando has the answer; she has started selling the magic mushrooms, hence the wave to the two students. They want £100 worth, so she and Freddie need to dry some more quickly.
- Adam calls to make sure that Chris is all right. She is feeling very tired. Elizabeth then rings with the same enquiry, and demands to know whether Chris still has her pension and the money from the sale of Woodbine. Chris assents to the former but is somewhat evasive about the latter.
- After hearing from Kenton that Lilian is in a bad way, Adam calls on her at The Bull and brings her a G and T. he is full of sympathy and manages to get Lilian to talk about her situation. has Justin kicked her out? Pretty much; he refuses to listen. She has no idea how to handle matters. Adam tells her he has been ruled out of the hit and run enquiry, but know he should not have hit Matt. No-one is coming out of this blameless. Only Chris, says Lilian forlornly.
- Back at Lower Loxley, Freddie and Noluthando get to work on the mushrooms. Elizabeth has gone to a dinner party so the coast is clear. They are going to finish up some risotto from the lunchtime trade in the orangery, but Noluthando thinks it needs spicing up for when Lily comes home. To Freddie’s horror Elizabeth returns; her dinner party has been cancelled. She remarks how good the risotto smells and samples it appreciatively. It has an immediate effect. Noluthando quickly gives her a glass of wine. As Elizabeth goes to change, the duo decide to hide the evidence. Elizabeth’s glass is quickly refilled on her return and a story about having ruined the risotto concocted. Freddie reminds his mother of Nigel’s favourite – fish fingers and beans, causing excessive laughter from Elizabeth.
- Christine is surprised when Lilian calls. With much embarrassment Lilian asks Chris to accept a cheque for £50,000. It’s the money Matt gave her, Chris is not happy about taking it; whatever the rights and wrongs, she has acted stupidly. There’s no fool like an old fool. Yes, replies Lilian sadly, that applies to me too.
