  • It may be mild outdoors but in the Dower House the atmosphere is distinctly frosty. Matt declines to do the washing up because he has work to do, since Lilian is spending so much time hospital visiting. He sends James his best – but declines to accompany Lilian to give the message in person.
  • Brian and Ruairidh visit Will in the woods; it’s a good job that shoot bookings are down because they lost a lot of birds in the wet weather and may have to call an end to the season early.
  • It’s Apple Day at Grange Farm and Joe demonstrates cider pressing. Despite Eddie’s advice he does it without his teeth in because they are hurting – then later can’t find them; it doesn’t bear thinking about. No sooner has Emma refused George a toffee apple than loads-o-money Will turns up and buys him one; Emma is not best pleased but Will is unapologetic when she later takes him to task about it.
  • Matt, already well down on Brownie points, loses a few more by suggesting that James who was tired, short-tempered and uncomfortable, might have been putting it on a bit. If that’s intended to head off his imminent arrival at their home, it’s not working: Lilian is determined that James will come and stay until he is better.
