Matt seems to be recovering; Harrison is making enquiries; Adam is upset.
Radio Times: Harrison hits a brick wall and gossip spreads about the night of the Hunt Ball
Characters: Adam, Harrison, Ian, Kenton, Lilian, Matt- It’s early morning and Adam almost manages to sneak out for an early start. Almost! He explains to Ian that he has a packed day ahead of him but is eventually persuaded to find time for a lunchtime sandwich at The Bull. Jennifer has telephoned with news of Matt. Adam’s worried that he will remember their argument and cause trouble. Ian’s sure that he won’t even remember it.
- Matt is awake and trying to explain to Lilian about how he put money in a jar at The Bull and left his suitcases behind the bar for safe-keeping. He becomes agitated until Lilian promises to retrieve them, today and keep them locked in her car boot. As she leaves, Harrison and a colleague arrive to take notes about the incident. Matt is quite adamant that it was an accident, pure and simple. He gives no reason why he was on the lane between Ambridge and Grey Gables. Anyway, it’s over. Forget it!
- Kenton helps Lilian with Matt’s surprisingly heavy cases. She’s back off to the hospital as there’s no one else to stay with Matt. As she leaves, Ian turns up and goes inside with Kenton. With a couple of BLT sandwiches on the way, Ian tells Adam that he had spoken to Justin at the Hunt Ball, just before he saw him leave “with a face like thunder.” Adam mentions that Justin seemed very angry when he got to The Bull later. They both ponder the idea that he was the mystery driver. “Surely not,” says Adam.
- At Matt’s bedside, Lilian almost has to swear that his cases are padlocked as he left them and that they’re safe in her car. He manages to avoid saying what’s in them, just that it’s his “whole life.” He thanks her for being with him and seems genuinely upset to find that she has been so concerned about his wellbeing. The thought of her “preparing for the worst” shocks him. He asks if it really would have mattered. She gives an honest reply. “Yes!”
- Adam has had enough of his sandwich and offers it to Ian. He sets off to the bar to order another drink; Ian’s surprised. Three pints is way over his usual limit, especially at lunchtime. Meanwhile, Kenton is questioned by Harrison. He tells him that Matt was “inebriated” on the night in question and seemed impatient. When the taxi driver arrived, he was annoyed that Matt had gone. Kenton suggests that no one would have seen Matt on the bend in question at night. When pushed by Harrison, Kenton is forced to admit that Justin Elliott had come into the bar looking for Matt, but when he discovered he wasn’t there, he left.
