Mike comes to terms with his future role and learns that his baby is a daughter.

Radio Times: Mike and Vicky grapple with an impossible choice, and there are harsh words at Willow Cottage.

Characters: ,
  • Shattered after long days at work, and facing another one, this is perhaps not the best time for Mike to discuss such an important issue as his fears over Vicky’s baby. He says things that he will later regret and is sent off to work before he can say any more.
  • Vicky is not at home when he returns; she has been out for some fresh air. Nothing has changed: Mike is beset with worries about a child who will always be dependent on them. He will be 80 when the child is 18, though it won’t be flying the nest even then. Vicky claims she can do it without him. Realising that whatever he says will make no difference is too much for Mike and he slams out – his turn for some fresh air.
  • A turn on Lakey Hill has made Mike hate himself for what said. How could he deny Vicky her one chance to be a mother? They have both said terrible things. She tells him he is an old dinosaur; things are different now. He realises that she is not just pretending to be positive. The baby makes its presence felt by doing a somersault, or so it feels. Mike declares that he wants to do his best to look after both Vicky and the baby, if she will let him. Vicky assures him that, despite what she said, she does need him. He shows interest in sharing her research; how can he help? He might like to start on the decorating the nursery. Pink!
