Perhaps there’s some light at the end of Kirsty’s tunnel.
Radio Times: Fallon gets an unexpected reaction, and Lilian is not to be disturbed.
Characters: Adam, Brian, Fallon, Helen, Jazzer, Kirsty- It’s very early in the morning as Jazzer heads for an extra shift at Home Farm. He meets Kirsty on a morning walk, which makes him late. At Home Farm, Adam and Brian are discussing Lilian’s reaction to the latest twist in her relationship with Justin. Apparently, Jennifer had to take her upstairs and put her to bed when she arrived home last night, as she was in such a state. Justin seems to have returned to London in an effort to rescue his marriage. Adam calls everyone’s attention to the job in hand, sorting out the polytunnels.
- At the farm shop, Helen and Fallon discuss Clarrie’s latest issues with her boarders. They should have left Grange Farm earlier in the morning but when Clarrie returned for lunch she was shocked to find that they were still in her bed. Fallon says that the Snells are being rather sniffy about the Grundys getting into the bed and breakfast trade. Helen mentions that Jennifer was in the shop first thing to buy a hangover cure. She was at great pains to point out that it wasn’t for her.
- Adam thanks Brian for taking Ed’s place this morning. Apparently, he had managed to get some contract work with a local farmer. He might also be called to work tomorrow and Adam wonders if Brian will be able to help then. He agrees. They discuss the fact that Adam is finding some difficulty in recruiting fruit pickers. Brian wonders about the future viability the enterprise especially as Britain’s exit from the European Union may well make matters worse. The conversation turns to Lilian’s recent behaviour but given his past history, Adam feels that he is in no position to pass comment. Brian also mentions that Peggy has asked to see Lilian. Oops.
- At the cafe, Fallon serves a triple cheese on toast to a starving Jazzer. Kirsty calls in to ask Fallon if she has any work available. At present, she hasn’t, but she lets slip details of Harrison’s secret plan for inviting women on to the cricket team. Kirsty is annoyed. Why wasn’t she asked? Will her miscarriage will disable her for life. Fallon’s sure that Harrison would have got around to asking her, but Kirsty’s not so sure. She storms out blaming Fallon for an apparent lack of support. “Some friend you are” she calls, as she leaves in floods of tears.
- As she gets outside she drops her keys. She searches for them in tears as Helen arrives. At long last Kirsty admits to her best friend that she’s not coping with her miscarriage. She admits to being vile to Lynda and Roy. She thinks that she shouldn’t feel like this as she wasn’t a real mother and she didn’t lose a real child. Helen tries to persuade her otherwise but as far as Kirsty can see, it was all her fault. Perhaps she didn’t really want it enough. It’s a whole future, a whole life that will now never happen. She hasn’t cried, until now. She dissolves into a sea of tears. Helen offers a cup of tea but Kirsty has other plans. She needs to apologise to Fallon and talk things over with Kathy at Grey Gables.
