Radio Times: Toby is quick to react, and Pip and Rex catch up.

  • Before she goes out, Jill is determined to take down the last few Christmas cards from the top of the bookcase. Ruth’s promise to do it later does not impress Jill.
  • Pip calls on Rex and finds him cooking on an industrial scale; he’s on an economy drive. He explains why; it’s news to Pip, also that Toby is in the same situation. Pip is worried how he will manage. She immediately phones Toby who makes light of the financial difficulties following the end of his allowance from dad. She insists they must talk later but right now she wants him to email some yield figures from a tablet in the living room at Brookfield. On the basis that Jill will be out, he agrees.
  • But she’s not out. Toby finds her climbing up the bookcase but fails to talk her down. She falls heavily on her ankle. Toby sits her down, elevates the leg and seeks some ice; then despite her protests he will take her to hospital.
  • Pip meets Rex again in the village and suggests asking her dad for a rent holiday on Hollowtree but Rex will not accept that. Nor would he accept a loan from Pip, if she had it to lend (in contrast to his brother!). Pip expresses faith in him, which he appreciates; she is glad they are still friends. Ruth interrupts, having had a call from Toby which Pip had ignored – it’s your gran.
  • At the hospital, Ruth and Pip are soon joined by Jill in a wheelchair with Toby pushing. Such a fuss! It’s lucky Toby was there; with grudging grace, Jill thanks him.
