  • Ursula is uncomfortable as she is made to sit beside Rob on the public green in Ambridge. Rob is determined to be seen in public; he views this as showing he has nothing to be ashamed of. Ursula gives in but Rob describes his three hour session with the psychologist as a total waste of time. He knew it would be useless as soon as he walked in and saw that Dr. Barber isn’t old enough to be a proper psychologist-and she is a woman. What can she know about a man’s feelings? Ursula supposes that the courts can’t afford to appoint a real psychologist. They both agree the whole charade is absurd. Rob is wise to their game but he must gain access to Gideon.
  • Tony and Johnny look over the Fordson. Tony tells Johnny how freezing it was on this type of tractor but Tony claims it worked much better than modern ones.
  • Ursula fusses about leaving Rob on Saturday. They discuss Rob’s new idea: He has instructed his solicitor to apply to the courts to legally change Jack’s name to Gideon. According to Rob’s solicitor, he has no chance of winning this application but Rob is convinced this will show Helen that she can’t break his spirit and that he will never stop fighting for Gideon.
  • Shula tells Alistair that Oliver was sympathetic about Rob and the hunt sab story. He sees that Shula must have been distressed and the incident makes no difference to the offer to Shula of joint hunt master. There is still the matter of money, however.
  • About a month ago, Alistair received an offer to sell his client list and join a large practice. If he takes up the offer, they will have a sum of money to use for the hunt expenses. But you won’t be your own boss, cries Shula. Alistair won’t have all the responsibilities and he will have days off. Life will be easier and Alistair will be able to choose his own hours. He will still be in Ambridge and the money will be handy. When Shula says that the offer has probably been withdrawn after all this time, Alistair announces that he rang the head office at lunchtime and he has set up a meeting to discuss the offer. Shula is touched that Alistair has been so thoughtful about her ambitions.
  • Johnny and Tony discuss the restoration of the Fordson on the way home. Tony is worried about things going wrong. Are you thinking about John, asks Johnny? It wasn’t your fault. Tony admits that John’s death is on his mind. Johnny argues that his father was a bit reckless and took too many chances. Johnny isn’t like that and neither is Tony. Let’s hope we can persuade Pat, agrees Tony.
