Rob makes a suggestion. Roy makes several unanswered calls. Charlie makes a move. Helen makes a shocking discovery.

Radio Times: Rob looks forward to 2015, while Roy is all alone.

  • As the rest of the country gets to grips with January 2nd, New Year’s Eve carries on apace in Ambridge, with Rob telling Adam how beautiful Helen looks, and Adam commenting that Jennifer once had a dress just like hers. Unlike everyone else at Lower Loxley, Helen is still on mineral water, at least until midnight. Will there be wedding bells in 2015 for Rob and Helen? asks Adam later. Helen is evasive. Things are just perfect as they are. She has got her life back.
  • A lonely and miserable Roy rings Phoebe to wish her a happy new year and to tell her he is thinking of her, but Phoebe is too busy partying to answer.
  • Dan enthuses to Pip about his army career, which may well take him abroad shortly. Pip has plans to travel, too. Dan asks where Spencer fits in to all this, and Pip tells him that he is probably watching television with his parents, but she has no intention of turning out like Spencer’s mother. She can’t bring herself to tell him the relationship is over, though.
  • Not making much progress with Charlie, Kate finds another dancing partner, and Charlie seizes the opportunity to ask Adam why he has not thanked him for the Secret Santa hip flask, which he had specially engraved. Charlie is disconcerted to hear that Ian and Adam are off to the States next morning, and says he needs some fresh air. Will Adam come? Charlie tells Adam he has always believed in following his instincts. This is one of those moments when nothing else matters. Does Adam understand? Apparently he does.
  • An even more lonely and miserable Roy rings Hayley to say he is sorry and that he misses her and Abbie. It seems that Hayley is out partying too, so presumably is also too busy to answer. As Helen goes outside to ring Tom, she encounters Charlie and Adam in a compromising position, and is deeply shocked.
  • Rob and Helen dance as midnight approaches, and Rob determinedly keeps up the flattery, with Helen announcing she is on Cloud 9 … she has never been so happy. Then comes the bombshell. Rob thinks they should make their family complete with a baby. Helen’s state of euphoric adoration seems to evaporate instantly. She is saved by a text from Tom and goes outside to ring him, to a sour ‘take as long as you like’ from her thwarted lord and master. An utterly lonely and miserable Roy rings Elizabeth in tears, but, partying at Brookfield, she, too, is too busy to answer.
