Roy and Hayley help Phoebe, and possibly themselves; Phoebe makes a life-changing decision; just how did the fire start?
Radio Times: Wassail, wassail all over the town.
Characters: Clarrie, Eddie, Hayley, Jennifer, Kirsty, Phoebe, Roy- Kirsty and Roy discuss the closure of Berrow Farm as they get ready to leave for the Wassail. Kirsty mentions her concerns about Helen. She looks very pale and seems somehow withdrawn. Well, Roy sees no problem on either front. With Kirsty’s worries unanswered, they make tracks for the celebration.
- Jenny, Eddie and Clarrie are chatting and agree that it’s good to have The Bull back in action at the heart of village events. Joe appears as the Wassail King along with Bartleby. Jenny accuses him of being the Green Man but is put right by Clarrie. Eddie starts to fret about Phoebe’s whereabouts; the parade should be starting soon.
- Roy and Hayley attempt to calm a rattled Phoebe. Alex has arrived, throwing her emotions into turmoil. Roy and Hayley are supportive, with Hayley suggesting that Alex may be being a little selfish. Roy adds the comment that distance between loving partners doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the relationship, a view not lost on Hayley. Eddie and Jenny arrive to chivvy Phoebe along.
- In a quiet moment, Hayley comments to Roy that she feels that they make a good parenting team. He agrees. Kirsty arrives and Roy goes to get her a drink. She expresses her regret at Hayley’s break up. Hayley comments that life must go on. Roy returns, along with Clarrie. She’s worried about the burning torches being used in the orchard. Eddie joins them. He’s hunting for the Wassail Toast!
- The decision is made. Phoebe tells Jenny that she will try for her Oxford grades. She had already told Alex, who’d announced that it was fine by him and that he’d “gone off her” anyway. Hayley joins them and shares the news. Phoebe prepares to perform her main Wassail function, that of being lifted into a tree to place pieces of cider-soaked toast in its branches in order to attract good spirits.
- With the toast tying safely completed, Eddie leads the assembled throng in a Wassail incantation. Later, Jenny thanks Hayley for her help with Phoebe. She can now get on with her “A” levels, without further distraction. Hayley leaves as Clarrie passes by wondering if Eddie will ever recover from his cider intake. As he’s heard singing at the top of his voice, Hayley dashes back with news that there’s a shed on fire.
