  • Helen and Pat exchange news about Rob. Helen’s unsure whether the story is true. She just can’t see him leaving like that and putting his relationship with the children in jeopardy. There has to be more to it. Pat suggests that he really did have an offer of employment that he just couldn’t refuse. Helen is still doubtful but leaves the shop to sort out the cheese room. Pat phones Tony, she has a job for him.
  • It’s raining heavily and Roy stops to give Tracy a lift. She wants to go to Felpersham, a long way out of Roy’s planned journey. She can’t believe that he runs such a dowdy hatchback car. When she suggests listening to music, her choice is quickly changed by Roy to something middle of the road. She dreams of escaping to a sun-soaked holiday destination. Roy’s not impressed. Not exactly a meeting of minds.
  • Tom and Kirsty are at her scan. Everything seems to be in order, though Kirsty opted not to know the baby’s sex. Tom asks if he can tell his parents and gets the go ahead. He mentions that he may be away for a night shortly, visiting a Nuffield scholar to get some tips for his application. She makes it crystal clear that there’s no need for him to tell her of his plans. She’s an independent individual.
  • Things are not going well between Tracy and Roy. She explains that she finds him dull and boring. Regretfully she must let him go, but she’s sure that he’ll find someone else as good as her. She asks to be dropped at a set of lights and waves him a cheery farewell. As he drives away, Roy’s heard to exclaim “Thank God!”
  • At Bridge Farm, Tony has carried out Pat’s instructions by visiting Rob’s flat. It’s empty, looks unlived in and has a “To Let” sign outside. Surely proof positive of his departure. Helen has phoned Jess and she has no news of what’s going on. Helen leaves and Tom takes the opportunity to tell his parents of his impending fatherhood. Their initial joy is tempered by the realisation that Tom and Kirsty will not be a family in the more accepted sense. Still, they pledge to do all they can to support them both.
  • Roy tells Kirsty about his near miss with Tracy. He can’t believe his good fortune, but wonders if he really is as boring as Tracy made out! At Bridge Farm, Tony are listening to music and talking through Tom’s news. It’s clear that they don’t fully understand the situation but at least one thing is clear to them. They are to be grandparents again and their role is quite clear… to be there and offer support and advice when needed.
