Radio Times: Jennifer is told not to splash the cash, and Jill finds a target for her anger
Characters: Jennifer, Jill, Justin, Lilian, Phoebe, Roy- Phoebe and Jennifer visit Jill in the cafe. Jennifer is too snooty to eat waste food and has to settle for an instant coffee. Phoebe, who has apparently never heard of the cafe before, is suddenly devastated to hear that it is about to close – that’s so unfair. Meanwhile she has sacks of clothes and computer bits as a result of her shopping trip with Jennifer.
- Lilian gets back early from her trip to London. Things weren’t too bad with James and Leonie. But Justin is too tied up with work and has to be prompted to notice her new hair cut. He does manage to say she looks wonderful but Lilian isn’t convinced.
- Roy gets back early from work too – too early for Phoebe to be able to hide the things from Jennifer. Roy isn’t impressed to see the designer clothes and guesses Jennifer bought them. Phoebe said it was hard to stop Jennifer going overboard. She could hardly say no. Roy agrees it is hard to say no to her but realises that Phoebe has more or less been asking for money and guesses that Jennifer has also agreed to fund Phoebe’s holiday.
- Brian is annoyed that Tom has said no. He thinks his reasons are nonsense but Jennifer says it’s his decision. Jennifer is trying to sort out some books that Lynda has donated for a book stall at the fete – a lot of Dorothy Sayers. Lilian turns up for supper and Jennifer gives her more confidence in her hair. Though she is dreading a speed watch session with Lynda tomorrow who is still trying to work out her age. Looking through the books later, it suddenly dawns on Jennifer that if Dorothy Sayers is one of Lynda’s favourite authors, it stands to reason that she must be the Harriet Vane who has been pestering Eddie.
- Roy drops Phoebe at Home Farm for supper to thank her for the gifts. Getting Jennifer on her own, he says that if Phoebe wants to go away she should earn her own money and realise that she can’t rely on freebies or the bank of Granny. They should help her find a summer job. Phoebe is embarassed that Roy has raised this with Jennifer but Jennifer says she can see his point. They agree on no more shopping trips. Jennifer offers to slip her a cheque from time to time but Phoebe appears to agree that Roy is right. Maybe she’ll ask Adam about fruit picking.
- Brian tells Jill his has heard about the closing of the cafe – just at the same time as the Duxford sisters are opening a restaurant. Jill isn’t impressed. Very few people can afford to eat at places like that and she wouldn’t be seen anywhere near it.
