Ruth is prickly. Phoebe is put under pressure. Eddie is technologically challenged.
Radio Times: Phoebe feels torn, and David may have been keeping something important from Ruth.
Characters: Alex, Clarrie, David, Eddie, Phoebe, Ruth- Kind-hearted Clarrie brings a pie round for Ruth and David – it was a 2-for-1 at the supermarket. She asks about flowers for Heather’s funerals and gets an ungracious and indeed rude response from Ruth, though when Clarrie talks about donations to a charity, Ruth warms somewhat. David appears and seems delighted with the supermarket pie. He needs to speak to Eddie about milking while they are in Prudhoe.
- Ruth has been cheered by Usha saying she will come to the funeral and could give anyone a lift. Ruth thinks Jill or Jim could take up the offer. Ruth has decided against speaking at the funeral and is worried that Pip will not be celebrating her graduation. When David tells her what Pip’s plans are, Ruth sounds less than pleased. No-one told her … Then Eddie appears, and is happy to cover the milking. Would Ruth and David like to place an order for their Christmas turkey meanwhile? Once again, Ruth is short.
- Phoebe’s boyfriend Alex wants her to stay for lunch at his house. Phoebe thinks she should go home to tweak her personal statement, and anyway, Jennifer is expecting her. Alex put considerable pressure on her, not only to stay for lunch, but to reconsider her Oxbridge application and apply to Felpersham instead, where she will fit in better. He loves her and wants them to stay together. Phoebe is clearly torn, but argues her case.
- Clarrie berates Eddie for daring to bother Ruth and David about turkeys when they are preparing for a funeral, but Eddie insists they must defend their business. He thinks they should embrace technology and use Facebook and Twitter to market their birds. Emma knows how these things work. Clarrie will consult her. It’s time the Grundys joined the 21st century.
