Ruth milks the herd for the last time. Toby claims to be giving Cupid a helping hand.
Radio Times: There is a mystery suitor, and Bert gets a proposition.
Characters: Bert, Joe, Pip, Rex, Ruth, Toby- Pip calls at the caravan to remind Rex about her birthday drinks. A large number of her family and friends will be there, but not Matthew of course. She thanks Rex for his advice; he was so right about her and Matthew. All they needed was to spend some time together. Rex is a real friend. It seems that his Valentine’s Day was less successful than Pip’s however. Not only did she spend it with Matthew, she had a local, hand-delivered card. Who could it be from? Could it be Toby’s handwriting? No, says Rex quickly.
- Joe and Bert discuss Ed’s new cattle. It will be good to see Grundy cattle on Grundy land again, says Joe. Bert swiftly reminds him that neither the cattle nor the land are theirs, but Joe dismisses that as an irrelevance. Apparently Eddie has his eye on some axles and wheels for the shepherd’s hut at Brookfield. Not if Bert gets there first; he has an eggmobile to build.
- Rex tackles Toby about the Valentine card and an interminable childish squabble ensues. Toby claims it was to help Rex’s cause; Rex thinks it was mischief -making.
- Pip calls at the lambing shed and offers to help Ruth. Pip will get up to see the cattle off, but will not be at the market to see them sold. Ruth hopes it has not spoilt her birthday. Why doesn’t she phone Matthew or, somewhat inexplicably, take a long bath? Pip rejects both suggestions and offers to help Ruth milk for the last time.
- After milking Ruth is in soft voice mode. She feels calm and less emotional than she expected. Pip apologises for making decisions about the farm with David; Ruth says it all turned out for the best. Pip asks if she and David are all right; never better, replies Ruth. We’re a team again, all of us. Pip knows how she feels. With Matthew on her side she can do anything. That is love declares her dreamy-voiced mother, and I’m very happy for you.
