Shula fails to heal the Archer family rift and Kate tells Jennifer about the incident with Phoebe.
Radio Times: Shula plays peacemaker, and Kate shares something personal.
Characters: Caroline, Jennifer, Kate, Kenton, Oliver, Phoebe, Shula- Shula volunteers to talk to Kenton and convince him there is no plot against him among the family. Oliver asks Shula to post a good review of Grey Gables, but Caroline sharply rebukes him. Apparently the Grundys are wreaking havoc with the guests’ hotel experience and are the cause of many poor reviews. Oliver stops Caroline from checking the review pages today; more bad news for Grey Gables.
- Kate complains to Kenton that Phoebe has rejected her for no reason at all and that the whole family treats her as a pariah. They won’t even invest in her ‘amazing’ business plan! Shula turns up and asks to speak to Kenton in private.
- Jennifer finds Phoebe in emotional distress and tries to find out the cause. When Phoebe is on the verge of confiding in her grandmother, Kate turns up. It is so unfair, cries Kate, the way Phoebe is rejecting her for no reason. Jennifer asks if she has been drinking and observes that it won’t help anything. What is going on, Jennifer wants to know, but after denying that she knows anything, Kate retorts that it is a secret and she can’t tell.
- Shula conveys to Kenton how their mother is about the ill-feelings. Kenton doesn’t want Jill to be upset but he doesn’t see what he could do about it. Shula suggests everyone should stop taking sides and try to see the others’ point of view. Kenton admits his financial situation is dire; he feels as if he has let Jolene down. Shula notes they are all still family and care about him; he can’t blame it all on David. The Brookfield Farm sale is not going to go ahead and Kenton needs to accept that and move on. Kenton sees David as the favourite, spoiled and greedy, who has ruined Kenton’s life. Go tell that to Mum, Kenton concludes.
- Caroline asks Oliver if the builder came. The good news is the building firm are ready to begin soon; the bad news is until the insurance is settled, nothing can be done. Oliver suggests they take a longer break, perhaps a holiday villa in Tuscany. Lynda and Roy can be in charge and Oliver says they can return when the repairs are completed. After an initial hesitation, Caroline agrees joyfully.
- Jennifer turns up at Kate’s cottage where Kate has a hangover and doesn’t want to let her in. Jennifer insists that it is essential that she knows the situation since Phoebe is living under her roof. Kate tells Jennifer what happened with Phoebe. Kate whines that she gets no thanks for being a good mother; she is trying to make up for all those missing years. Kate does not listen to Jennifer’s hesitant comments on Kate’s handling of the delicate situation. Well, Kate declares forcefully, she’ll just keep on acting as a good mother should, although she gets no thanks or appreciation.
