  • Bert is finishing up the chicken shelter which Pip is helping to haul into place. Along the way, Pip confesses to Toby about some uneasiness on the phone with Matthew; Toby wastes no time in sowing doubts and worries in Pip’s mind. They come across Carol who describes Bert’s creation as ‘The Good Life meets Dr. Who’. Bert is confused and Carol rushes to make a more straightforward compliment. As per usual, Rex has to prompt Toby to thank Bert.
  • Carol apologises to Bert for forgetting that it has been one year ago today that Freda died. She wouldn’t have asked him to work in her garden on this day if she had remembered. When Carol mentions Lynda’s memorial flood garden, Bert is suddenly angered. He is disgruntled because he feels that Lynda always seizes the limelight without a thought for others who have lost more in the flood, such as himself. In passing, Carol asks Bert what he thinks of Rob. Bert is full of praise but Carol is doubtful. Perhaps Rob is just not her sort of man.
  • Toby and Rex are busy setting up the henhouse. They decide to head out to The Bull for a meal and Toby plans to talk to Wayne about their eggs. Toby tells Rex that there is trouble brewing for Pip and Matthew; Rex should have a look-in. Rex demurs that he is happy just being Pip’s friend. Show me a good loser, intones Toby, and I’ll show you a loser!
  • Carol asks Bert to come in for a cup of tea. Carol suggests that Bert consider dedicating his garden at the bungalow to Freda; that way he will have control over the memory of the flood and his loss. That is not a bad idea, muses Bert.
