Radio Times: Grey Gables staff learn their fate

Characters: , , , , ,
  • As the Grey Gables staff await Oliver’s decision about their future, Lynda and Roy discuss Phoebe and her travel plans. Lynda assures Roy that Phoebe is level headed and sensible; following the revelation about the pregnancy test, Roy is not so sure, but keeps his concerns to himself, saying only that he is concerned that Phoebe’s finances are not up to those of her Oxford friends.
  • Finally the fruit picking has come to an end, and Phoebe turns up to draw her pay. She asks Adam if there is any more work, but sadly there is not. Johnny arrives, and is congratulated on his batting in the last match. But cricket is not uppermost in his thoughts; he has heard that Home Farm has a vacancy for a tractor driver, and wants to know if he might be considered. His self-deferential approach may not sell the idea to prospective employers, but Adam demonstrates his kinder side, and encourages Johnny to talk about what he has learnt and what skills he has. Eventually Adam tells Johnny that he will be considered along with any other candidates, but Brian will have to be consulted. Johnny leaves in a rather happier frame of mind.
  • As the staff gather to hear Oliver’s decision, they wonder why Kathy has left the room. But soon their fears are set aside as Oliver announces that, despite a good offer, he has decided not to sell. Instead, he will move permanently into the Grosvenor Suite, so will be more visible than of late, though Kathy will remain as General Manager. Immense relief is palpable.
  • When Phoebe gets home, she finds Roy waiting for her. After asking about Grey Gables, Phoebe is told to sit down; Roy duly embarks on an awkward enquiry into the pregnancy test. Phoebe protests; she is nineteen now and she is always careful. Roy points out, somewhat clumsily, that it made things difficult with Lexi, and suddenly Phoebe’s eyes are opened! Lexi is lovely, she says, and was so kind to me. You’d make such a good pair. Unwilling to waste a moment, she puts Roy’s phone in his hand. He is to ring Lexi at once and fix a date.
