Toby makes Pip an offer she might not refuse. Rex makes David an offer of help on the farm.

Radio Times: Brian takes some advice, and Pip plays it cool.

  • David helps Rex to put up netting around the gosling pen. He and Toby hope to walk the goslings out to pasture this week, but Toby has not shown up yet. When David queries the reason, Rex seems quick to defend his brother and extol his marketing virtues. Rex asks how Heather is, and David tells him Ruth may be back for a few days. He hopes that Eddie will step in when Pip leaves for her new job. Rex offers to help with grain hauling if David is short-handed, but his offer is declined.
  • Brian consults a solicitor about the family conflict. He is anxious to secure the future of the farm for Ruairidh when the time comes, and is worried that Adam may jeopardise this. The solicitor suggests allowing Adam a fixed term to prove the value of his plans; when that is up, if the farm is losing money, Brian can revert to his old way of managing the cropping.
  • News comes that Eddie will not be able to milk this evening, having ripped a nail out at the cattle market. Pip offers to do it before an evening’s grain hauling. David has heard that neither Eddie nor Ed will be available for extra work in September; he just hopes Ruth will be back. Pip finds Rex looking at the Herefords, and tells him there is no future in grazing cattle; intensive rearing is the way forward.
  • Toby finds Pip and asks if she would like to help walk the goslings out. He asks her to come for a drink, but she says she will be too busy. Still playing hard to get, she also declines an invitation to the Game Fair in Yorkshire. Toby persists, and Pip’s defences begin to fall, though she tells him she is not like her cousin Kate. That, says Toby, was just a drunken fling. Unconvinced, Pip says she has no intention of getting involved with Toby, because she is off to her new job. Toby’s interest in Pip and the land she will one day inherit is not weakened by this; say you’ll think about it, he pleads.
