  • Johnny and Tony are checking the fields for debris early in the morning. Tony asks questions about how it is living with Tom. The dubious body-spraying turns out to be Johnny’s solution to Tom’s stinky socks. Tom briefly greets the pair but he continues his work in order to take his mind off the interview.
  • Carol tells Jill that she was missed at the Bring-and-Buy over the weekend. Carol asks if Jill were avoiding her but Jill denies it. They revisit the disagreeable confrontation over Toby attending Jill’s birthday tea, much to Jill’s discomfort.
  • Josh took a picture of a Fordson, a vintage tractor for Tony to see. He spotted it in a barn while Johnny was chatting up a few girls. Tony shows Johnny the photo and reminisces over classic Fordsons he had in the past. This one hasn’t yet sold and although it is difficult to assess its condition from the picture, Johnny encourages Tony to go and take a look.
  • Susan is off her juice cleanse for a proper breakfast; she needs some energy if she is working all day. Emma is making a birthday cake for Susan’s birthday, notes Neil, and Christopher has brought lovely candlesticks. Susan is doubtful about getting older and refuses to be comforted or to find anything to celebrate. You’ve been looking at the calendar again, accuses Neil.
  • Carol insists that Jill stop working in the garden and come inside for tea. It becomes clear that Carol wants to discuss the birthday confrontation although Jill tries to avoid doing so. Carol points out that Pip is very young; in addition, Carol wants Jill to recognize that her bias against Toby is due to the distant past. Carol is convinced Jill is thinking about Grace Fairbrother who was Phil’s first wife and also Rex’s father who mistreated Elizabeth. Jill denies this and pins her hopes on Pip going away for a hen night. A few days away will help her find sense about Toby Fairbrother. Carol is doubtful but she has said all she can.
  • Susan is still bemoaning her looks. She is certain that some people are trying to peel off the modesty sticker and one person commented that it was nice to see some women who didn’t care what they looked like. Neil claims dubiously to believe this was meant as a compliment and he points out that his face shows the results of time, too. The juice cleanse hasn’t worked; something has to be done, wails a disconsolate Susan. Neil tells her it isn’t her looks that need changing but her view of herself; Susan needs to accept herself as the result of the good and bad which she has experienced in her life.
