Characters: Bert, Clive, David, Jill, Lynda, Ruth, Sean
- Jill is in St Stephen’s on her own saying a prayer for those who mourn.
- Ruth brings david a flask of coffee whilst he is ploughing ‘Round Robin’. David would like Bert to take over but he can’t be found. They discuss the milking once harvest is over, as Phil can only do the odd bit of relief milking.
- Bert meets with Ruth and mentions that it is not right Shula doing the milking as she is an estate manager not suited for the ‘Specialist art of milking’. Bert tells Ruth that they weren’t thinking of his workload when they agreed to let Shula do the milking. Ruth replies by saying that the cows are very sensitive creatures, and the facts are that when Bert was milking the cell count went up and the yield went down.
- Sean buys Clive a drink and tells him that he is very busy at the moment with his decorating business, and that the play has come at just the wrong time. They have been waiting for 45 minutes for Lynda to turn up to the rehersal, and when she does Sean tells her in no uncertain terms that they do not need her to tell them what to do.
- Bert asks Jill to listen to some of his lines especially the prologue as he is convinced that Robert Snell and Joe will not be able to convey to the audience the theme of the play. Jill is not really in the mood for listening as she is preparing a casserole.
- David has met Debbie at the field he was ploughing to be told it is no longer a priority, and that they(ie Brian) wants him to plough 70 acres of the estate land, he gets the impression all is not well at Home farm. Ruth discusses the milking again with David trying to persuade him to do the milking once harvest is over, he doesn’t want to at all.
- Bert and Jill meet again in St Stephen’s, and Jill mentions that she would like a few moments on her own. She prays again for those who have suffered, and says that ‘Love lives on’
