Characters: John, Julia, Nelson, Pat, Richard, Tony, Usha
- John finally talks to Tony about the figures, who is as shocked as anticipated. Eventually they compromise on a smaller number of pigs while they assess the true market.
- Julia is well and truly settled at Nelson’s (“an oasis of calm and tranquility”) as isn’t in a hurry to return to Lower Loxley, management seminars, four-wheel drives, clay pigeon shooting and all. She’s also keen on being involved in relaunching the wine bar!
- Richard is falling apart, mainly through disillusionment. This increases when he finds out that the health authority is granting Barraclough’s request for an independent review. Richard is not convinced by Usha’s view that this process is as much for his benefit as for the complainant.
