Phil and Daniel see as far as the stars. Tom can see further than Brenda about Mike’s idea for Willow Farm.
Radio Times: Tom stirs up trouble for the Tuckers.
Characters: Brenda, Daniel, Jill, Mike, Phil, Tom- Phil has his new toy, an astronomical telescope, though he is most indignant when Jill puts it that way; when Mike calls for his milk money he is most impressed. Fascinating though it is, he must get on and leave Phil to scratch his head about how to make it work. It is a matter of pride because Daniel is coming round later to see it; he is indignant all over again when Jill implies that there is an element of competition with Daniel’s other grandfather, Jim.
- Tom is going to the Cricket Club meeting and Brenda is not amused at being left on her own. She will join him in the pub later, meanwhile she has a visitor – her dad – and he wants to talk.
- Phil may be stumped by it but a motorised computer-driven telescope does not daunt Daniel. It’s American, right? So when entering the date it has to be in US format; elementary, dear grandad.
- Mike is surprised to find that Brenda is rather cool about his scheme for Willow Farm, though she does not seem to know why. She wants time to think it over.
- The telescope is a big success; even Jill gives grudging encouragement when they show her Saturn.
- Explaining the proposal to Tom in The Bull, Brenda’s opposition has only crystallised as far as a reluctance to give up her old room – even though there will be one for her in dad’s part of the house. Tom is more astute: Roy is getting a much better deal – his inheritance now, while Brenda must wait. She mustn’t let this one go; she should tell Mike and Roy that they can’t do it. How selfish is that!
