• When she leaves Lower Loxley, Usha carries Elizabeth’s concerns, mainly for Freddie, who slept badly last night; his mum thinks that the exams are worrying him and maybe they are asking too much.
• Usha’s next call is at Brookfield to see Ruth; she has seen David and thought that he looked tired. He is, but until the trustees meeting in three weeks time, he wants to support Elizabeth and Ruth will support David. It’s not for long.
• Brenda thinks Tom is taking her out to dinner and is remarkably cooperative when he insists on blindfolding her to preserve the surprise. So while they are driving round Lakey Hill several times, the guests are assembling at Willow Farm. Harry and Jazzer think that the memories of Brenda displayed round the walls are toe-curling – one of Vicky’s daft ideas that Tom couldn’t head off.
• At Brookfield they are not in party mood. After last night, both David and Ruth are happy to have an early night. David will talk to the Cathedral School next week to see if the exams can be postponed.
• Contrary to expectations, Brenda thinks the memories are a lovely idea. Harry is keen to hear from Jazzer about Burns Night and he suggests a party at the flat, though with rather fewer guests than Jazzer had in mind; Harry will cook the haggis and Jazzer will make sure it is suitably Scottish (perhaps that will include catching the haggis!).
• No speeches, but Mike does say a few words. Brenda is very gracious in response, especially towards Vicky; she couldn’t have asked for a better celebration.
