  • It’s the last day of the Flower Festival, so Peggy and Jennifer must rush back from church in Darrington to tend their arrangements. Yesterday was very busy, so they have high hopes of a good result for the Organ Fund, though already Jennifer is working on the next event – swishing; Peggy thinks it sounds like a jumble sale but Jennifer insists it is a more up-market swap shop for as new and unworn clothes.
  • Jago has come all the way from Cornwall to collect the cows he bought from Bridge Farm. He has just taken over a tenancy and was delighted to have bought the stock. Tony likes him and is pleased that the cows are going to such an enthusiastic young farming couple; it feels as if they will be carrying on the work he and Pat have put in over the years breeding a fine herd. Unknown to Jago, they have their fingers crossed because on Tuesday Alistair will be testing ‘lonely cow’, the inconclusive reactor; they shudder to think what will happen if she tests positive for TB but they will know by Friday. Off go the cows, so that’s it: the end of an era at Bridge Farm; Tony suggests a pint at The Bull.
