Dan returns from Sandhurst even more enthusiastic; Shula is coming round to the idea of the Army.
Radio Times: Dan is having fun, and Tom and Kirsty see their new home.
Characters: Dan, Jolene, Kenton, Kirsty, Shula, Tom- Back from Sandhurst, Dan is sporting a fine pair of army boots which he has to break in. It was wicked, really special and he learned a lot; he passed the medical with flying colours and his fitness was fine – well above the minimum. It’s difficult to talk while Shula is trying to conduct a lesson, so he invites her to lunch at The Bull.
- Tom and Kirsty are standing in what will one day be their kitchen, one day being 14th August.
- At The Bull, Jolene is still using the new barman, the silent Callum, to tease Kenton. Anticipating a lot of visitors for the Passion play, they plan how to capitalise on this. If Kenton pulls his weight, Jolene might even forget about the blocked drain.
- Shula explains that, Dan being so far ahead in his thinking, she and his dad have a lot of catching up to do. She fosters the idea of university with membership of the officer training corps but Dan is not having that. He is raring to go and he has been accepted by the army. He wants that sense of ‘belonging’; he can’t see himself in an office job. He will also get to play with some cool kit. Shula realises that he has thought it out; he is not acting on impulse. He acknowledges that the world is an uncertain place but that is part of the appeal. He has been thinking about his birth dad: a safe, respectable solicitor and how did he die? – in a car on a quiet country road.
