• “Local businessman starts Am Vale relief fund” – that’s the headline in The Echo. The man behind the generosity is Justin Elliott. Susan is pleased; Pat is outraged.
• At Home Farm, Peggy has brought some unwanted warm clothes for distribution to those in need. Phoebe will take them as she goes to Grey Gables to help her dad; this doesn’t go down well with Kate who wanted her to come to the cottage to discuss furniture. Jennifer is doing some washing for Kathy and Jamie: the machines at Grey Gables won’t cope; Jennifer taking in washing – whatever next? There follows a spirited discussion about what University is for, with Kate spouting forth on holistic experience while Jennifer and Peggy put a higher priority on academic work.
• In the shop, Pat and Susan are sorting out the water damaged stock; it all has to be thrown out before the drying out can begin. Is there somewhere else in the village where they can set up a temporary store?
• When Phoebe returns, the discussion turns to Mothers’ Day; Kate is not best pleased to learn that Phoebe will be with Hayley and Abbie in Birmingham.
• Pat is thinking of offering accommodation at Bridge Farm (miraculously spared from the flood!) for a temporary shop; Helen approves. There’s good news about Tony: he is coming home at the end of next week. They should celebrate. Peggy reminds them that she hasn’t had her birthday party yet, so next week would be a very good time to celebrate everything together.
