  • Friday the 13th but surely nothing bad will happen. Outside The Bull, Fallon is explaining to Bert that she is opening a Flood Bar upstairs. Will it take off? Bert isn’t very encouraging; when he sees it, he thinks it looks a bit spartan.
  • At The Stables things are looking better but Alistair’s surgery is out of action. He is making visits but has had to cancel many appointments. They are thinking about temporary premises but compared to some others they have a lot to be grateful for.
  • Bert is expecting Freda home on Monday so another bed is moved into his room. David cheers him with the prospect of a makeover at the bungalow – a new wood floor and a new kitchen for Freda.
  • Hearing about the Flood Bar, David and family go there for supper. The village needs its pub; many must feel the same way, because they are not short of customers. Ruth talks about her mum’s reaction to their change of plan; it’s a disappointment of course but she doesn’t want to make a fuss. Her oldest friend has just gone into sheltered accommodation and is happy; maybe mum will warm to the idea. Into this happy atmosphere comes a bombshell …
  • Shula rings from the hospital. Freda died a few minutes ago after a massive heart attack. Poor Bert.
  • Back home, Bert regrets that he didn’t have chance to say goodbye. They said she was on the mend. This is the end of everything; how can he go on without Freda? Jill gently assures him that things do get better. Ah, but Jill had her family around her; he will have nobody when David and Ruth move away. They reassure him that he will not be left alone: they are not moving.
