• Back from a successful shopping trip, for school uniform, with Henry and Pat, Helen wonders what all the pans are for; clearly mum has kept mum about Rob’s special meal. She is instructed to relax in the garden but is determined to show off the new dress she has bought for the opera tomorrow.
• Speaking of the opera, a technical run-through is under way; Jill and Carol decide it will be glorious against the backdrop of the park. Jill confirms that Elizabeth still plans to come to Pip’s farewell lunch on Monday, though she has no idea what Kenton’s plans are.
• Stunning! That’s Rob’s verdict on the new dress. They reminisce over their path to the ecstatic state in which they now find themselves. Rob feels that, though the whole world may be against him, he will always have Helen standing by his side.
• Carol is most impressed by the room Jill will soon be moving to – rooms really, for she has her own sitting room with splendid views. Jill has reservations. What use can she be here? She is not cut out to be lady of the manor.
• With a nice meal and rather too much wine inside Helen, Rob comes to the point of the evening: they have everything they ever wanted – except a baby of their own. Best to draw a veil over the rest of the proceedings …
