Jill is making the much dreaded adjustment. Carol and Jennifer meet beside John’s grave.
Radio Times: Jill is alone with her thoughts, and will the truth ever be understood?
Characters: Carol, David, Elizabeth, Hester, Jennifer, Jill- Hester’s trip back to the train station is thwarted by a puncture in one of Carol’s tyres. They contemplate calling a taxi, when Jennifer arrives to give Hester some home-made jam she’d promised. Jennifer offers to take Hester, leaving Carol to organise the repair. Jennifer insists on leaving in plenty of time to avoid rushing – or rather to allow time for Jennifer to pump Hester for information. This could be her final opportunity to unearth the truth and in the dying moments on the platform, Jennifer desperately steers the conversation back to Carol and John, but Hester misunderstands the point she is driving at and the conversation is drowned out by the train’s arrival, much to Jennifer’s frustration.
- It’s Jill’s move day and as she packs up her last things from Brookfield, David reflects on his mishandling of the situation, as far back as the plans to move to Prudhoe which he then backtracked on. Jill insists that David has nothing to reproach himself for and they share kind words and a hug. Elizabeth encourages Jill to make herself at home, help herself to tea, coffee and cake from the cafe or orangery, whenever she likes, at no cost. With all her needs catered for, this is going to take some getting used to and Jill fears being made redundant. A work matter calls Elizabeth away and Jill calls on Phil for comfort.
- Jennifer and Carol unexpectedly meet at John’s graveside. Jennifer insists she does not make a habit of visiting – in fact, it’s the first time since the funeral – for both of them. Carol addresses matters head on and, without bitterness, acknowledges the potential there may have been for Jennifer and John, had circumstances allowed. Carol also tells Jennifer that she is aware of the suspicion Jennifer has voiced about John’s death. She candidly recounts the pain of having watched him suffer for days without potential for improvement and that her final act was one of kindness. Moreover, she feels certain that in her position, Jennifer would have done the same.
