Eddie’s a little unhappy about his car and Clarrie’s touched that one of his reasons is that he would rather buy Edward a better birthday present than have to shell out on fixing the paint damage. He even threatens to do the cooking for the canine halves of the Grey Gables owners and dogs weekend which Clarrie had turned down! When he gets to Bridge Farm though he says that he quite likes the colour and he’ll be happy with another tin to finish the job! Pat, though, feels a little guilty because she’d been prepared to pay for a proper respray.
With calving still in full swing, Ruth is tired so David suggests a curry. On his way to Borchester to collect it he drops in on Shula and invites her over. She accepts, only in the meantime Usha had dropped in on Ruth and is given a similar invitation. As David and Shula arrive home carnage ensues as Shula tries to back away only for Usha to explode. All the pent up emotion that she’s been controlling when talking to Richard batters down Shula’s feeble attempts at apologies. Usha leaves her in no doubt as to who she blames for the break-up, her not understanding why Shula couldn’t have said no and for her fragile emotional state since. As Usha storms off and Shula meekly returns home, David and Ruth almost argue, but admit that in a small village they were bound to meet eventually and it would be better to leave them to sort it out on their own.
