  • Nigel’s so keen on getting his bell-ringing up to scratch, Neil’s devoting some of his lunch hour for extra one-on-one tuition. This, at least, gives him a chance to forget about the stories of Julia’s behaviour last night – apparently she monopolised Sir Sidney and talked incessantly of the new bell fund and not of Jennifer’s project, the wood!
  • Susan, who worked with Shula for five years and thought she knew her, is unequivocal in where the blame for her precarious job position lies.
  • It’s crunch time for the cricket club as the members meet to discuss their potential merging with Darrington. There are two distinct points of view, that loyalty to the club is more important that one bad season or that the club should be about more than just the better players getting a good quality game. Shula points out that the club is an integral part of the village which gets lots of approval. Alistair questions the loyalty of some of the players, mentioning Neil, who had suggested that a good game is important to some. The loss/non-appearance of some players was cited to, at which point Susan mentioned that it wasn’t necessarily the quality of the cricket that had driven Richard to leave the village. An embarrassed Shula leaves the hall.
  • Shula’s in floods of tears and Alistair comforts her. While telling her that no-one despises her (and revealing he didn’t know her affair with Richard was common knowledge) he apologises for hurting her recently and tells her that he still loves her.
