Radio Times: Susan has a bright idea and there is more than one surprise for Roy

Characters: , , , , ,
  • At the dairy Helen tells Susan of the plans for their new buildings. Susan is keener to talk Kefir, but Helen is dismissive; it’s something of a niche market, and they need to concentrate on their staples; ice cream, yogurt and cheese. She adds that in in her opinion Susan ‘hasn’t quite nailed it.’ Before Susan can draw breath for a suitable put-down, they are interrupted by the arrival of Lynda, who has agreed to milk the goats while Pat is on a course at The Elms.
  • On their way to Felpersham, where Lexi is to have tests for her suitability as a surrogate, she and Roy encounter Alan, who is also off on a training course. Roy introduces Lexi, and Alan politely enquires what they are going to do in Felpersham. A certain amount of waffling ensues, and Lexi says she is going for medical tests. Luckily Alan has to get off so Lexi and Roy are saved further embarrassment. Lexi says people will have to get used to it when they see her pregnant; Roy is more concerned about what people will think when they learn it is not his. Lexi dismisses his concerns. There is nothing to be ashamed of.
  • In her coffee break Susan goes out to the goat shed and asks if she can try her hand at milking. She finds Lynda’s instructions hard to understand and becomes flustered, and the goats respond badly. It gives Lynda the perfect opportunity to put Susan in her place; she has noticed in drama rehearsals how Susan is unable to take direction, which would account for the fact that Lynda receives rave reviews, while Susan… Lynda is saved from assault when she suggests that goats’ milk Kefir might go down well. Susan wastes no time. Returning to work she repeats Lynda’s suggestion word for word, claiming the idea as her own. Helen agrees to consult Tom. She does indeed do this, and Tom is keen on the idea, so Helen relays this to Susan, who is thrilled. She will give it her best shot.
  • Back from his course, Alan bumps into Lexi again, and asks how she got on in Felpersham. She says everything went well, but they are overheard by Susan, who is agog to find out what is going on. Lexi informs her that Roy came too, so Susan is left with the idea that it was a shopping trip.
  • Jennifer swings into action by sending Lexi and Roy a food hamper, with which they are not entirely pleased. Lexi tells Roy she has booked them into a haunted hotel for his birthday, to include dinner, so at least they will not have to eat Jennifer’s frangipane tart that night. This hamper is just the start, says Roy meaningfully.
  • Alan tells Susan about the Lenten Appeal. People will be asked to donate £1 every time they complain about something. he hopes it will make everyone more positive in their outlook. Susan quickly assures him that she never complains, but almost manages to part with her first £1 when she learns that Lynda has already signed up.
