Alice confides in Adam while Pip tries not to confide in Lily

Radio Times: Lily offers her analysis and Adam has a keen student

  • Claiming to be anxious to see what makes Home Farm tick, Alice spends time with Adam as he sprays fertiliser. Half-joking, Adam asks if this sudden interest in the farm is to do with wanting more shares, an idea Alice hotly denies. Eventually he lets her take the controls, and Alice reveals her disenchantment with her job, where ‘Smarketing’ is the latest buzz-word, and where she is expected to work 24/7. Adam points out that farming can be dull and repetitive, but to Alice, being in touch with the soil is all that matters.
  • While David prepares to give the supremely confident Lily another driving lesson, Pip loads lambs onto the lorry for the abattoir. David does his mother-hen act, but Pip assures him that she is fine and no, she does not want time away from the farm. David takes the hint, asks Lily to turn the music down and sets off in driving instructor mode.
  • Returning safely if ear-battered from the driving lesson and Lily’s incessant talk, David goes to see how milking is progressing, leaving Lily and Pip together. Lily wants to know all about Pip’s splitting up from Toby, but Pip is not in soul-baring mood, despite Lily’s assertion that everyone wants to confide in her. Pip’s conversation with Tom has made her think; she realises that she only had feelings for the naughty boys Jude and Toby, while the safe ones like Matthew and Spencer did not appeal ultimately. She is only good at messing-up. Lily declares that she is proud to have Pip as a cousin, and only wishes Pip was her twin in place of Freddie. she thinks Pip’s life will be one of fun.
