Characters: Adam, Alan, Alice, David, Eddie, Jennifer, Pip, Ruth- Alan meets Jennifer as he pays a visit to Jack and Peggy. He’s found some sports equipment in the church for Alice’s collection, and Alice herself has gone out to pick up yet more. Her letter from the RAF has arrived in her absence, and Jennifer is on tenterhooks.
- Eddie helps with the Brookfield silaging, and enjoys Ruth’s lunch. Pip arrives to help after school, and cuts herself on some barbed wire. David praises her for her good sense – it could have ended up in the silage.
- The RAF has not accepted Alice, and she’s very upset. Adam takes her along with the pickers to the games night at the Bull, and she cheers up in the company of one particular, and handsome, Hungarian.
- Jennifer tells Adam that she’s determined Brian must tell Alice himself about his going to Ireland. His secrecy has caused too many problems.
- Ruth brings yet more food out to the silagers, and David winds Eddie up about the need for risk assessments and public liability insurance if he’s to have a farm open day. Eddie falls for it.
- Alan drops into the Bull for a drink, and has a call from Usha. She’s received an unpleasant letter, and Alan needs to get round there quickly.
