  • Usha tells Alan how her weekend at home went. Her father was unusually quiet when she told him about her engagement, but at least her brother was there to give her moral support. Now she’s worried about Mabel’s reaction.
  • To his surprise, Brian actually enjoys the day at the otter sanctuary, especially when he sees how the much children are enjoying themselves. He and Jennifer comment on how much Alice has grown up since her trip to South Africa.
  • Alice makes it clear that her focus is now on the RAF, and she needs to do some voluntary work in preparation for her final interviews. Jennifer is horrified when she discovers that this means working in the drug rehab. unit, and Brian horrified when he learns that Alice will be back chamber-maiding next week. Characteristically, he immediately offers a hand-out, but Alice is determined to be independent.
  • Alan picks Mabel up, and immediately she senses that something is up. When Alan tells her about Usha, Mabel is less than pleased. She likes Usha as a person, but can’t countenance his marriage to a Hindu. It goes against all that her church teaches. When Usha arrives, Mabel spells it out; she does not approve of their marriage.
