Alice’s phone is switched off. Matt’s phone is switched off. Jenny’s phone is not in her bag. The successful candidate has not phoned Brian. Only Paul is answering calls.

  • An over-anxious Jenny tries to contact Alice to hear whether she has passed her MSc. Brian is scornful when he overhears. After all, he has much more important matters to deal with. There was a clear front-runner in a good field for the herd manager post, Rob Titchener, but for reasons Brian cannot fathom, Rob needs to talk the job offer over with his wife first.
  • Lilian rings Arthur to hear that Joyce may soon be discharged. She tells Arthur to ring her if they need any mobility aids installing. She then has to break off the conversation as she has to take another call. It is the hospital, to tell her that James has had an accident.
  • Brian takes Jenny to eat at Grey Gables as they have both had such a stressful day. She discovers that she has left her mobile at home. Brian admits he removed it from her bag to stop her stressing over Alice. Jenny is furious. Supposing Peggy were to have a crisis. Brian always has an answer; Lilian or Tony will have to deal with it.
  • A frantic Lilian learns that James is now conscious but has what may be a serious leg injury. She tries to contact Matt, who is not answering his phone, despite repeated attempts by Lilian. She then tries Jenny, with similar results.
  • Eventually Lilian manages to speak to Matt, who seems noticeably uninterested. He sees no point in coming to the hospital and is anxious to get back to his night out. In tears Lilian rings Paul.
