  • Another cock-up on the catering front! Matt is not put out; they can go to the golf club – Peggy too. Why is Matt in such good spirits? There is a meeting on Thursday about the paper mill project. It seems no time at all since Lilian declared that these lies could not go on but go on they do: she convinces Matt that she needn’t go to the meeting, and then she rings Paul…
  • … to learn that Thursday is a busy day for him and he can only manage the afternoon. Lilian admits that no man has ever opened his heart to her as Paul did last Friday. This touching conversation comes to an abrupt end when the two-timed Matt approaches, still apparently suspecting nothing.
  • Peggy meets the Tuckers on the threshold of the village shop. She finds herself unable to join in the general cooing over baby Beth and disappears into the shop in indecent haste, leaving Vicky very upset. Mike tries to console her with the thought that some people find a Downs baby hard to deal with; that’s their problem.
  • Over the lunch table Peggy confesses her sin; it’s such a pity. Lilian puts her right: it’s not pity they need but support; to Mike and Vicky, Beth is a blessing. When Matt joins them he has an interesting view about the ‘poor kid’ – having Vicky as a mum.
  • How does she do it? Paul rings and Lilian makes an excuse to leave her family, go outside and answer it. Peggy thinks she is being a snoutcast. She will be meeting Paul in Cheltenham – again; he will travel by train but this time she will drive. The deceit continues.
