• Bert feels fit and well today and returns to work, which annoys Neil because he’d been looking forward to a week’s work at something a little more challenging than weeding Marjorie’s garden. It slightly embarrasses Phil and Ruth because they’ve nothing to offer him. Christopher is, apparently, proud of his father, the stand-up comedian, which is more than Neil is – he’s feeling worthless and undervalued.
• Susan’s singing the new doctor’s prasises and is curious as to what his wife will be like – she’s due up today so that they can house hunt.
• One of Jill’s bee colonies has been wiped out by an infection – slightly spoiling her plans to sell beeswax and honey at the Borchester farmers’ market.
