Bert v Brian.

Radio Times: Bert v Brian.

Characters: , , , , , , , ,
  • Jennifer’s asked Betty to help out with the cooking at the shoot next week, only now Betty’s worried that with the (albeit slightly tenuous) family connection Jennifer won’t be paying her to help. Mike tries to have a quiet word with Brian, but is interrupted on several occasions.
  • Baby’s naming ceremony is the subject of some comment, not least from Mike who doesn’t fancy dancing around stones on the side of a hill in October with a bunch of hippies. Parents, grand-parents and great-grand-parents seem to be looking forward to it, symbolic gifts of life-representing items included.
  • Mike saw William shooing some of the Home Farm pheasants off Grange Farm land and back onto Home Farm land and told Eddie who saw this as terrible behaviour for a Grundy. Indeed, keeping the birds not just encouraged, it’s actually legal. Not that Eddie would want to tempt them onto his land, with some wheat spread around. No, not at all. Roy didn’t see William with wheat there later. At least Mike wouldn’t want Brian to hear that he did, anyway.
  • It’s the big ploughing match and Eddie’s even lengthened his odds on a Brian victory. Bert’s confident and does a good job, finishing after Brian and proclaiming quality over speed, but Phil the judge disagrees and while complimenting Bert’s work, feels that commercial pressures, combined with a reasonable furrow, should see the victory go to Brian.
  • Phil’s had some bad news. The 15 cows they bought in to expand the Brookfield herd were bought from a farm that’s just declared a TB outbreak. They are to expect a visit from the ministry vets on Friday.
