Radio Times: There are ambitious plans at Home Farm, and Carol is having fun.

  • Carol admires Bert’s work in her garden as she prepares for her Bridge evening. Since Peggy will not be there, she has invited Jennifer instead.
  • A maudlin Lilian visits Tony with Jennifer. They saw him open his eyes, but this only seems to produce further tears and clichés from Lilian. Jennifer has had a card from Jess, announcing the arrival of baby Ethan Jeremiah. With an astonishing lack of sensitivity, she wonders whether she should tell Helen and Rob.
  • Charlie urges Adam to pursue more contract work, and gets a frosty response. Adam is quite busy enough at Home farm. Since clichés seem to have struck Ambridge like the Black Death, Charlie tells Adam not to burn his bridges and to keep an open mind.
  • Bert appears to have been gardening in the dark, and is packing away his tools when Jill arrives for the Bridge evening. She soon realises that he is worried about his future when the farm – and his bungalow – are sold. Jill tells Carol about Alan’s busy Christmas; he has organised a children’s service with live animals (not Otto, presumably), he has booked one of the cathedral choirs for the Carol Service and will be working on Boxing Day to dedicate the new window.
  • Brian informs Jenny and Adam that he is prepared to go up to 5.5 million to secure Brookfield. The mortgage will have to repaid by Adam and Debbie in the future, but the sale of the farmhouse with a parcel of land should fetch a good sum. Jennifer is all for it, and goes off to her Bridge session. Brian insists on opening a bottle with a somewhat reluctant Adam. He can almost taste the land already.
  • Carol lights a herbal stick and offers her guests her own concoction of herbal tea and some ginger wine. Bridge fizzles out when Chris falls into deep tea-induced sleep on the sofa. Her rather barbed reminiscences of John cause Jennifer to claim exhaustion and to beat a hasty retreat. How strange, says Carol with a hint of malice, she didn’t touch her herbal tea.
