Caroline’s memorial service takes place at Grey Gables and her loved ones pay tribute to her.
Radio Times: Clarrie gets ready to host. Oliver expresses his thanks
Characters: Alan, Clarrie, Ed, Oliver, Peggy, Shula- Clarrie tells Shula that Eddie had to buy new turf because the pigs had churned up the lawn so badly. Alan arrives but Shula becomes very emotional when she speaks of Dan’s flowers and how much Caroline did for Dan since he was born. Clarrie suggests using one of Caroline’s lovely vases for the flowers and brings Shula into the house to compose herself. Peggy and Oliver are happy to see all of Caroline’s friends and family gathered in the garden to remember her life.
- Alan announces that he is not attending as a vicar but as a friend; however, he begins his eulogy with a passage from Ecclesiastes, ‘To every thing there is a season’. He discusses how Caroline loved nature and he reads a poem ‘My Funeral’ by Wendy Cope which he notes reflects Caroline’s views. Upbeat disco music is played as Shula remembers Caroline’s arrival in Ambridge. Shula recalls the scrapes that she and Caroline had over the years. Peggy admires Caroline’s ability to get things done; because Caroline’s family was well connected she convinced Princess Margaret to come to an opening in Ambridge. Peggy notes she remembers Caroline best as a faithful friend to Jack.
- Oliver plays an aria from ‘Tosca’and sadly observes he and Caroline should have been enjoying the opera in their adopted land of Italy. She was confident, sophisticated and made Oliver the happiest of men. Oliver also mentions Caroline’s natural understanding of people; she could placate the most cantankerous of hotel guests. She was a perfectionist and could achieve anything she determined to do.
- After the memorial, Peggy talks about Caroline’s way with dogs. Oliver tells Alan that Caroline lost her faith in God after the terrible accident which killed Mark Hebden. Ed reminds Oliver that Caroline played a princess in a pantomime and she was his idea of what a princess was. She never gave up on Ed during his bad time and he will never forget that. Clarrie brings up the jug which was smashed. Ed mended it and tells Oliver that is what he and Caroline did with him. They mended Ed and you can hardly see where the damage was.
