  • Extolling the joy of having no exams to work for, Pip helps David sort lambs for the abattoir. Pip thinks David will be pleased when he sees the latest milk figures. David indulges in great adulation of his wonderful daughter’s wonderful work on the farm; she will be in charge while he goes to Prudhoe for Ruth’s birthday.
  • It’s a busy morning at the stables, with Peggy calling to see Christine and Elizabeth calling on Shula. The sisters retire to make coffee while Peggy puts a proposition to Christine; would she like to move in with Peggy? Sounding ever more martyred, Christine thinks she would be a burden, as she is at the stables. Apparently Alistair is often short with Shula, and looks for any excuse to be out of the house. Peggy makes appropriate reassuring noises. She too is lonely and would love to have Christine there. When the news is broken to Shula and Elizabeth, they think it an excellent idea. Christine, meanwhile, will sleep on it.
  • Elizabeth learns the terrible news that the Ambridge fete has been cancelled. After dropping Peggy off, she calls on David and suggests that they hold it at Lower Loxley, which, conveniently, is not holding Loxfest this year. Elizabeth will consult Jill.
  • Trying hard to sound casual, Pip tells David that she happened to bump into Toby, who told her they had been gazumped over Pear Tree Farm. David is unconvinced as to the viability of the Fairbrother goose production scheme, but Pip asks whether Brookfield might rent them a few acres. The answer is no; who knows what will happen with the road scheme.
