Harrison has ideas for Fallon’s birthday and Kenton has ideas for a fete.

Radio Times: Kenton feels rebellious, while Harrison prepares for birthday duty.

  • Harrison is determined to celebrate Fallon’s birthday in style, but she has no intention of doing so, and makes it clear that she hates surprises, which in Ambridge must be fairly difficult to avoid. Fallon feels that she is over the hill, reaching thirty and without a proper job, but Harrison is not to be put off.
  • Kenton regales customers at The Bull with his account of events at Kate’s housewarming party and Brian’s fury. Fallon is cross with him for telling everyone; inexplicably she feels sorry for Kate because her marriage has failed. Such pity is not shared by Kenton, who asks whose fault that might be, nor by Neil, who calls her a poor little rich girl.
  • Harrison has an idea. He asks Jolene what Fallon’s favourite film is; he will organise a screening of it with Fallon’s friends at The Bull. Jolene is distinctly lacking in enthusiasm for the idea.
  • Mike arrives for a farewell drink with Neil, glad to escape Vicky, who is in whirling dervish mode. They still have Brenda’s stuff to clear out of the loft. It becomes increasingly clear that Mike has no wish whatsoever to move; they will be living on a busy city street, where police and ambulance sirens can be heard all day. Trying to put a brave face on it, Mike says he will be back regularly until his milk round is sold. He asks about the party Susan is throwing; cocktails and canapés replies Neil. After a silence, Mike asks what canapés are. But at least Vicky will like it
  • When Kenton learns that there is to be no village fete, he is furious. Apart from denying Ambridge its traditional summer revelry, business at The Bull will suffer, so the only thing is for Kenton and Jolene to run the fete themselves. Fallon will provide the pop-up tea tent, Eddie will run ferret races, Jazzer can provide bagpipe music, Harrison will do something unspecified and Carol Tregorran will tell fortunes. It will surely be the best fete ever.
