Clarrie discovers the truth.

Radio Times: Joe and Eddie try some covert cookery. Meanwhile, Kathy is very worried.

  • Joe and Eddie plan their Sunday roast, knowing that Clarrie will be at Ed and Emma’s. Eddie will shop at the supermarket so that no-one in Ambridge sees him. But their plans are threatened when Clarrie tells them she’ll be back after church, as she’s not due at Rickyard until one o’clock.
  • Jamie’s phone call to Marty is interrupted by Kathy, checking up on Jamie’s revision. Jamie is his usual charmless self, and Kathy ever more desperate to help him.
  • A problem calving means that Emma has to entertain Clarrie on her own. She seems to lack enthusiasm for the new baby, and grumbles about George, though she does plan to make him a ladybird cake for his birthday. She offers Clarrie a taste of the trial cake, but Clarrie self-righteously refuses to eat cake in Lent. As soon as she can, Clarrie leaves; she has a feeling that her menfolk are up to something.
  • As the roast comes out of the oven, Joe and Eddie look forward to their lunch, but are interrupted by a call from Emma to say Clarrie has left her glasses at Rickyard. Realising Clarrie is on her way, Joe and Eddie try vainly to banish all smells and traces of their lunch from the kitchen.
  • Kathy spots the Grundy attempts to destroy the evidence and even the habitually morose Jamie finds it funny. Then Clarrie arrives and all Eddie’s efforts to keep the truth from her prove vain. The bread and cheese she left is uneaten; the smell of roast chicken fills the house.
