David can’t sleep for counting sheep. Tom can’t sleep for counting the cost of going into partnership with Brian.

Radio Times: The future looks bleak for Tom.

  • It seems that no-one can sleep in Ambridge. Ruth wakes to find David not there, so goes to the lambing shed in search of him. In doing so she wakes Pip.
  • At 1 The Green, Brenda wakes to find Tom not there. She goes downstairs to look for him.
  • In the Brookfield lambing shed, chaos reigns and David’s temper is shortening by the minute. Ruth lends a hand and order is restored as the lambs are reunited with their mothers and start to feed. David is very grateful and sends Ruth back to bed as she has to be up early for milking.
  • Tom’s row with Brian is keeping him awake. He tells Brenda he feels he’s going to be stuck as Brian’s slave for ever. All he wants is for someone to remember that he did all this for John; he’d just like to hear John say ‘Well done, mate.’ But all Brian cares about is profit margins. Brenda tries to put the case for the supermarket deal to Tom, but he’s in no mood to consider it.
  • Pip cooks breakfast for the whole family, to David’s delight. There’s a bit of an ulterior motive – it’s her birthday, and the sooner they eat, the sooner she will get her presents. Meanwhile she’s full of the diet she’s adopting – eating only food produced within a 5 mile radius of Brookfield. Ruth comments on Kenton’s mysterious ‘investigation.’ David dismisses it as ‘just Kenton.’
