  • Jennifer has called on Alice with some provisions, though how she has managed to cook anything at all in her present kitchen is a miracle. Alice is treated to a peek at the estimate; she queries whether they have put an extra 0 on the end. Jennifer had better pick her moment to show Brian. Continuing in her extravagant mood, she recommends to Kirsty not to compromise on anything for a truly happy marriage.
  • At Brookfield, David confronts Ruth: something is up. Despite her protestation that this is not the right time, David insists. So Ruth tells him. She is pregnant. He can’t take it in; it’s the last thing he was expecting. Ruth does not seem thrilled at the prospect of another baby; it’s hard graft.
  • Alice and Kirsty are supposed to be shopping for shoes, but when Kirsty lingers at Elizabeth Jennings’ shop, Alice insists they go in. Of course, Alice pronounces that Kirsty is a vision of loveliness in the dress. So in no time at all, perhaps with Jennifer’s words still ringing in her ears, Kirsty has a second wedding dress. Helen is amazed when she learns of it.
  • Jennifer is scrounging sacks from Brookfield for Lynda’s alternative sporting challenge and there follows a superficial discussion about people being grateful for what they have got. David’s view is that it’s human nature for people to want to build on what they have. Jennifer agrees: if you see something you desperately want, there’s nothing wrong in striving for it. No doubt Jennifer has a new kitchen in mind but nothing could be further from Ruth’s or David’s thoughts.
