  • Caroline and Shula are out riding and Caroline is almost envious of how happy Shula seems at the prospect of Richard’s return from Manchester. While Shula’s a little confused at Alistair’s outward politeness, she’s very definitely in two minds about her future – not least because leaving Ambridge would be taking her away from Mark’s grave.
  • Eddie’s had a letter from the environment department and Joe (and Clarrie) are very keen to know its contents …. but he’s not saying.
  • Richard returns and Shula’s glad he’s back. His new job is all lined up and he suggests that they go house-hunting in Manchester together. Only she’s not sure she wants to go. He’s amazed, he’s given up everything, his practice, Usha, his life in Ambridge for the chance at a future with her. She’s sorry (which doesn’t cut it with him) but she doesn’t feel able to leave. He’s completely gutted and leaves her in tears, sobbing her heart out.
