Ed and David both need cheering up; Eddie and Jill do their best.

Radio Times: Ruth receives some bad news, as do Mike and Ed.

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • All good things come to an end: Adam is back working on Estate land this week so there is no more work for Ed. Eddie sympathises; it is unfair of Charlie Thomas. There’s more trouble ahead: Mike reports that the pasteuriser is kaput and cannot be fixed until tomorrow; they cannot process today’s milk. It is Mike who must bear the immediate loss but Ed worries that Mike’s heart is not in it any more and he may give up.
  • At Brookfield, David is tired because they are in the throes of calving. A phone call brings bad news for Ruth: her mum has had another fall – not serious but she is in hospital – so Ruth packs quickly and hits the road.
  • When Charlie checks up on his progress, Adam pleads for another tractor driver and of course Ed is free. Charlie won’t budge on that; he also has no news yet for Adam on a new contract.
  • It’s 2am and David is dealing with a breach birth. Enter Jill with a flask of coffee and an all important second pair of hands. She admits to still having the same sense of wonder at such events. David worries that his style of farming is being left behind. Jill reassures him that there will always be a need for farms like Brookfield doing balanced mixed farming – whatever Charlie Thomas says.
