Radio Times: Johnny’s plans fall apart, and Pat and Tom may have been overheard

Characters: , , , ,
  • Freddie is having a toddler tantrum over his maths exam and wants to go home. There really isn’t any point. Elizabeth says he just has to have confidence. His Dad wouldn’t give up would he?
  • Johnny is ready to go off to the festival, Pat having made sure he has clean socks. Tom is dropping him off at college. Pat thinks she might like to be young again but 4 days in a muddy field isn’t fun. Susan then overhears Pat taking a call from Justin.
  • Freddie bumps into Johnny at college. Amber isn’t coming. Her Gran has had a stroke. Johnny thinks he should have known it wouldn’t happen. He’ll just have to go on his own. Johnny wishes him luck with his exam.
  • In the exam room, Freddie just panics and leaves. He pretends to Johnny that he had got the date wrong for the exam, it isn’t until next week. He’ll dash home in a taxi to get his stuff and meet him at the bus station.
  • Tom finds Susan in the Bridge Farm kitchen – her washing machine has broken down and Pat has let her use theirs. Tom is sulking that Brookfield is doing Open Farm Sunday – how very dare they. Susan doesn’t want to get involved but does let it drop that Pat took a call from Justin. Later Tom pushes Pat on what Justin said. Pat said they were still thinking it over and admits that Justin was pushing for a decision. Tom asks which part of making a decision doesn’t she understand? Then Elizabeth calls. Has Pat seen Freddie? Susan, however, has heard Tom shouting about the call from Justin and is very interested.
  • Johnny and Freddie pitch camp. He really shouldn’t be missing Amber when he has him. Freddie refuses to answer a call from Elizabeth and Johnny asks him whether Elizabeth does know he is there. She does, doesn’t she? Freddie says yes and will call her back later. Then they start noticing girls, one might be interested in Freddie. Eventually Johnny persuades Freddie to answer the phone to Elizabeth. She insists he comes home. If he doesn’t come home she will come and get him. Freddie pretends his battery has gone and says to himself “This isn’t always about you, Mum, this time it’s about me”.
